Access Control

When drawing up a specification the following should be considered:

  • Is vandalism likely to be a problem by having equipment damaged.
  • What is the usage of the property.
  • What is the usage of the adjoining property.
  • What are the client's requirements
  • Are any other security measures needed.
  • Types of systems available, eg...

    Digital
    Card Entry
    Magnetic Strip
    Weigand
    Proximity
    Barcode
    Combined Digital and Card Entry
    Biometric

Choice of system to be offered in relation to facilities and/or required, eg

  • Level of security
  • Volume of use combined with speed of operation
  • Transaction recording (on-line/off-line)
  • Expandability
  • Programming ease
  • Deletion and/or addition of users
  • Number of users and possibility of future expansion

Doors, Locks and Releases , eg

Type of lock
Type of release
Type of closers

The initial specification of a system should take account of the design criteria, ease of use, the quality of the equipment provided, a high standard of appearance of the installation, compatability of the equipment and possible future extension of the system. In all cases, the power supplies, both mains and standby should have 30% spare capacity when the system is installed.

When a system is designed for use in a new building, it is essential to involve the building designers with a view to producing a system which has a minimum disruptive effect on the finished building.
