With these systems there is a basic choice of analogue or digital available. These are used in housing environments, banking, prisons, detention centres, leisure industry and general commercial office situations.

The external devices can be very simple in appearance using high impact plastic laminates. They can equally use sophisticated finishes such as brass or bronze or in extreme situations, stainless steel. These finishes can be applied to both the audio and video external units although they would be analogue or digital in operation. In the case of simple audio systems, these are normally controlled through a handset or a series of units throughout the complex as with housing or on a one to one basis. A similar situation would apply where video units are used and these can be provided as purely monitors or monitors complete with handsets dependant again on the operational environment.

Where these systems are used in highly serviced residential environments, they can incorporate porter switchboards allowing all calls to be screened by security staff before being relayed to tenants.
